Basement Apartments in Brampton

The City of Brampton is aware of the basement apartment/secondary dwellings issue, and as required by Bill 140. They have been working since 2002 to implement policies that will permit second units as of right in detached, semi-detached and townhouse dwellings, subject to meeting zoning requirements.
A Recommendation Report with the implementing policies and a proposed Registration By-law were presented on Monday April 13 at the Planning Committee meeting. If endorsed by the Committee it is anticipated that the policies will be approved by Council on April 22nd. At this point they are recommending that the policies be in effect 60 days after Council’s approval, so by the end of June, the City will be in a position to start accepting registration applications. The City of Brampton is proposing that second units be registered with the City, and be inspected to ensure compliance with the Building/Fire Codes.
